Here's a close up of the incorrectly-positioned image. The photo's edge doesn't reach the outer bleed edge in Lightroom. The printed book would likely have a thin white edge at the top. Here's a close up of a correctly positioned full bleed image in relation to the page bleed. Notice how the image edge goes all the way to the page edge. Bleeds—where the image runs off the page—are a powerful dramatic tool in comics. In some traditions—manga in particular—bleeds are so essential as to be part of the basic storytelling vocabulary. However, you can only “see” bleeds in the final printed book and you need to plan ahead if you have decided to use them.

It’s best to set up your InDesign document with a bleed before you start working on your document. You can add a bleed later, by going to File > Document Setup, but it can be fiddly as InDesign will only apply your revised settings to the pages you currently have selected.. The best place to start is right at the beginning of the process, in the New Document window. Bleeds are required in all artwork with an image extending to one of the borders. Add an eighth of an inch (") to each side to allow for cutting. For example, for a 4” x 6” postcard with full bleed, the image size should be submitted at ” x ” (red box).

By bleeding an image beyond the trim size – often called a full bleed image – if there is any movement in the printing process, there is more image in the bleed area to compensate. So if the paper moves a few pixels, then a few pixels of the image in the bleed . Working with Corners, Borders, and Bleeds A few things to keep in mind if you want to have borders around the edge of your cover or pages: In order to keep the binding and trimming of your book consistent and spectacular-looking, please set up any border at least 1/8th of an inch from the edge of the cover or page.
